"The flash and fire of Muntu Dance Theatre embodies the simple, beautiful truth that the spirit of dancing - the spirit in dancing and the spirit for dancing - is universal and irresistible."

Ways to Support Muntu

Conga drums. Djembe drums. Kutiro drums. Arms and feet flying fast as sound in a colorful blur of beads and cloth. Energy breaking through walls, surging down streets, grabbing you wherever you are and pulling you into the rhythm of life.

Muntu Dance Theatre has been a vital force in communities since 1972. Throughout the country and abroad, our traditional African and African American dance concerts have opened a world of discoveries about movement, culture, heritage and style. They tell timeless stories about what is important to us through language that everyone can understand.

Muntu means "Essence of Humanity". We see no limits to what the human spirit can accomplish, nor boundaries between our artists and the communities where we perform. Dance is simply our way of connecting, communicating, committing to the people with whom we share experiences and expertise.

The vast majority of our youth want to take part in positive, creative and self-affirming activities, not the risky behaviors that were played out across our city this summer.

Muntu’s Arts for Community Empowerment (ACE) programs offer alternatives to participating in risky behaviors. ACE programs engage youth in arts and cultural activities under the direction and positive influence of professional artists.

Help Muntu Meet the American Masterpieces Challenge!
Muntu is the proud recipient of a $25,000 American Masterpieces Award from the National Endowment for the Arts for our ‘Cultural Bridges: The Pearl Primus Project.’

Our goal is to match this Award and raise an additional $25,000 to help support community engagement activities and the arts education component of the Primus Project. Your support will help us to provide quality programs for youth who otherwise would not be able to participate.
