"The construction of the building marks the first African dance company to own its space in the United States and will surely have an astounding impact on all of the art communities in Chicago."

The Environment
The new Muntu Performing Arts Center will be located at the northeast corner of 47th Street and Greenwood Avenue. The Center will be an important cultural and economic link in a community development effort that already includes revitalized commercial, residential and educational sectors. Muntu’s new home will enable it to expand its unique contribution to the cultural life of Chicago and the development of North Kenwood-Oakland as a “cultural corner” and Chicago destination.

An essential goal in the design of the Muntu Performing Arts Center is to create a prominent and intriguing presence in the neighborhood without being intimidating and out of context. A generous lobby has been provided to be used for formal and informal gatherings. The unique façade will allow light to glow outwards, giving the building a welcoming presence and identity during evening performances.
