Workshop

Visual Arts & Crafts
Participants learn about the historical, social, and cultural aspects of dance and music through "make and take" workshops. These workshops utilize the elements of African adornment in costuming, mask making, fabric design, and beadwork. Cowrie shell necklaces, bracelets, beaded belts, paper mache mask, and musical instruments are examples of items made in a one, two, or three-hour workshop. These sessions work well for small groups with children, parents with children and/or teachers with students.

Parents Interactive Workshop
These workshops help parents to understand the fundamentals of African dance and music that will be taught to their children in the classroom. The history of music and instrumentation of a particular region of Africa will introduce the dance of that particular ethnic group. Through hands on experience of playing percussive rhythms, singing songs, and movement, parents open the door to new means of communication with children. Respect for our elders, ancestral lineage, and the maintenance of history through oral folktales are highlights of this interactive workshop.
