Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago presents “Cultural Bridges…The Pearl Primus Project”. This concert showcases the company’s stunning range as it presents historic premieres and classics from its repertoire which draws on the strength and beauty of traditional African and contemporary African American dance.
“Cultural Bridges…The Pearl Primus Project”, will feature two Company Premieres, “A Negro Speaks of Rivers” and “Hard Time Blues”, both signature works by Dr. Pearl Primus. “A Negro Speaks of Rivers” was originally choreographed by Dr. Primus in 1944 and premiered by her company in 1945. The work includes text from the Langston Hughes’ poem “A Negro Speaks of Rivers”. “Hard Time Blues” premiered in 1945 and is based on a song about sharecroppers by folksinger Josh White. Muntu Dance Theatre will be the first African dance company to receive and perform Dr. Primus’ works. Muntu has been awarded an American Masterpieces Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of this project.
“Cultural Bridges…The Pearl Primus Project”, will also feature “Legend: A Tribute to Michael Jackson” showcasing new choreography by Amansu Eason, a principal dancer with Muntu. Also included will be a Guinean Medley, including the celebratory and invigorating dances of Yankadi/Kassa/Macru as well as the pulsating, dynamic drums and musicianship of the Muntu Drum Orchestra.
